The dongle is such a new concept that it’s not included in many dictionaries, and is often misspelled as ‘dongal’, ‘dongel’ or ‘dongall’. In fact the term dongle has been commonly used in the IT world for years. Dongle traditionally refers to any small piece of hardware that connects to a computer in this way, but as the mobile broadband revolution rolls on, mobile broadband dongle is increasingly shortened to simply dongle, so the word dongle is fast becoming part of our everyday language.

Dongles range from the size of your computer’s mouse to the size of a small phone and are usually connected to the USB port using a short wire.
