What is cable broadband?
Cable broadband is broadband transferred along fibre-optic cables under the ground. In the UK, the service is not universally available and is mostly on offer in urban areas.

Approximately 12.6 million UK homes have fibre optic cable access and this figure is expanding all the time. As well as for broadband, cable is also used for cable television and landline telephone calls.
The UK fibre optic cable infrastructure is currently owned and operated by Virgin Media which bought the NTL and Telewest group who previously owned it in 2006.
