Vodafone offers the fastest mobile broadband service of all five UK competitors, according to financial advisor Fool.co.uk.

In a recent test carried out by the website, 3 was identified as offering the best value, while O2 was described as being "painfully slow" when compared with the other players.

According to analyst Szu Ping Chan, 3 offered a good service for those who were reluctant to enter into lengthy contracts, while Vodafone was praised for both its speed and its functionality.

She noted: "All five dongles were very easy to install. I simply plugged them in and followed the instructions to get online."

However, the site also advised Mac users that some additional software may be needed for the hardware to work properly.

For those considering mobile broadband, she suggested carrying out a coverage check beforehand to find the provider that would provide the best service for local areas.

In other developments, Vodafone announced recently that it would extend its 7.2 Mbps broadband coverage throughout the summer in order to improve the customer experience.
