A number of UK broadband providers are set to meet with the government this week to discuss its Digital Britain proposals.

Telecoms firms such as Orange, 3 and T-Mobile are due to speak with communications minister Lord Carter on Tuesday (June 2nd) in a bid to ensure all British households have access to 2Mb internet by 2012, the Observer reported.

The proposed meeting comes on the back of a report by Carter's assistant Kip Meek, which suggested capping the frequency spectrums used by O2 and Vodafone to support fairer access for other providers.

According to the paper, T-Mobile, Orange and 3 are pushing for Vodafone and O2 to sell part of their share of the spectrum before they collect any of the television airwaves that will be freed up when analogue receivers are eventually switched off.

A BBC-commissioned report published last week revealed that about three million homes in the UK cannot currently access broadband services.
