BT plans to double number of Wi-Fi hotspots
Posted 19th August 2009 at 2:05pm by Kimberley Howson
Broadband operator BT has unveiled plans to significantly extend its wireless network.
The provider is set to double its number of Wi-Fi hotspots from 500,000 to one million, the Times reported.
According to the newspaper, the company intends to complete the development of its wireless network in the next six months.
Dave Hughes, BT Retail's Director of Wireless Broadband, explained that Wi-Fi has become increasingly popular and traffic grows by around 50 per cent, if not more, every year.
He noted that consumers are demanding better coverage while they are on the move and want reliable connections, while others are keen to have constant access to personal emails or social networks.
"Pretty soon there will be a Wi-Fi hotspot on every corner in the UK," Mr Hughes predicted.
