Prince Charles has claimed that so-called "broadband deserts" are harming rural businesses.

In a column for the Daily Telegraph, he stated that not-spots in countryside locations are putting many companies at a disadvantage, as the internet is a "necessity" for many.

He explained that such problems could have a major impact on businesses, as many in rural areas do not have access to quality services.

The Prince of Wales said: "Many of those who are being left behind in the internet's 'slow lane' are the very same people who look after the countryside on our behalf – Britain's livestock farmers – and they are struggling as never before."

"Generations of inherited knowledge" could be under threat if such people move away from the areas due to the issue, he added.

The Country and Land Association is one of several rural bodies that have been campaigning on the issue and it recently criticised research which suggested the UK's broadband coverage was of a good standard.
