The MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey has described broadband speeds in the area as a "disgrace".

Danny Alexander has suggested the revelation that speeds in the region are significantly below those seen in other major parts of Scotland will lead to changes across the area.

Research by Top 10 Broadband revealed that the average connection speed in the region is 2.52Mb.

Talking to the BBC, he said: "This report reinforces the complaints made by local residents and businesses about the slow broadband speeds in Inverness.

"It is simply a disgrace that the Highland capital is so far behind other Scottish cities."

The quality of broadband services in the area has also been condemned by Stewart Nicol, the Chief Executive of the Inverness Chamber of Commerce.

He claimed in an interview with the Press and Journal that the average speed was "completely unacceptable" and fails to meet the needs of businesses across the region.
