A price war over the TV packages offered by broadband provider Sky could take its toll on British sport, an MP has claimed.

The Conservative Chairman of the Commons' Culture, Media and Sport Committee, John Whittingdale, has suggested that Ofcom's efforts to encourage Sky to offer its premium sports packages at a lower cost could have a wide impact.

He told the Daily Telegraph that a reduction in prices may affect the sports clubs that are "dependent" on the money to move forward and fund their drive towards success.

"Many sporting bodies are concerned that if Sky is forced to cut the price they can charge for Sky Sports it will reduce the amount they will pay for rights and reduce the money paid to clubs," he explained to the newspaper.

Last year, Sky described the proposals as both "extreme and unprecedented" and argued that the plans go beyond competition law.
