Sky 'plans 3D TV sports coverage'
Posted 22nd January 2010 at 2:56pm by Kimberley Howson
Sky is set to offer its broadband and digital TV subscribers the chance to watch 3D coverage of top sports events later this year, according to reports.
The Daily Mail reports that the company is planning to broadcast live Barclays Premier League action in the format before the end of 2010, through its forthcoming 3D TV system.
It is believed that trials of the technology have already taken place on a range of sports coverage, including cricket, boxing and golf.
Talking to the newspaper, Darren Long, Director of Operations for Sky Sports, said: "We've spent over 18 months recording 3D content, and sport works very well. Sport is all about emotion, and seeing it in 3D adds to the experience."
He added that it has been entertaining seeing the "amazed expression on even the most cynical person's face" during trials.
Sky is yet to confirm when its broadband and TV subscribers can expect access to the 3D service, but it has revealed that new sets from the likes of LG, Panasonic and Samsung will be compatible with the platform.
