Internet service provider (ISP) TalkTalk could be set to launch its own high-speed broadband network across the UK, it has been claimed.

The firm, the telecommunications arm of the Carphone Warehouse, is reportedly considering the case for making a large-scale infrastructure investment.

BT is currently spending £1.5 billion on upgrading its telecommunications network in order to improve broadband speeds, but this latest revelation suggests the firm could soon have competition.

Charles Dunstone, Chief Executive of the Carphone Warehouse, told the Financial Times that TalkTalk is considering the feasibility of launching a fibre-based network.

However, the company is also investigating the possibility of teaming up with a rival broadband provider on such a scheme, he added.

Earlier this week, TalkTalk reported that 36,000 new customers signed up to its broadband packages between July and September 2009.
