A group of university students have successfully persuaded broadband provider Virgin Media to improve connection speeds in Exeter, it has been reported.

According to the Express and Echo, seven third-year students from a shared house in Morley Road had mounted a campaign to receive faster broadband.

They alleged that Virgin had failed to deliver on a promise to improve broadband speeds in the area, and were planning a day of protests outside the firm's retail store in the city.

However, Virgin contacted the group to confirm that their demands were to be met, and the protest was called off.

Last week, it was reported that Virgin Media had commenced its battle against illegal filesharing, by trialling deep packet inspection technology.

A spokesman for the firm told the Times that the Detica solution would help Virgin "understand the exact nature of unlawful traffic on [its] network".
