Ludlow MP calls for rural broadband commitment
Posted 4th February 2010 at 10:59am by Kimberley Howson
The government and internet service providers must commit to projects geared at improving rural broadband services, a Shropshire MP has claimed.
Wading into the ongoing debate, Ludlow MP Philip Dunne said there had been plenty of discussion over potential schemes to bring high-speed broadband to businesses and households in the countryside.
However, speaking to the Ludlow Advertiser, he said that affirmative action is now needed to minimise the technology gap between urban and rural areas.
"It is vital these initiatives, whether by public sector, commercial or community groups, are given the opportunity to develop, so that the digital divide does not grow," Mr Dunne stated.
Last month, the provision of high-speed broadband services was made a priority in neighbouring Herefordshire.
Councillor John Jarvis, Cabinet Member for Environment and Strategic Housing at Herefordshire County Council, said attempts were underway to create "a land of opportunity" in the region through broadband provision.

Both the government's and Conservative Party's commitment to high speed broadband is very dispiriting for rural areas of Herefordshire and Shropshire as well as for people residing elswhere who have no access to broadband services of any speed, or are expecting imminent withdrawal of a service due to government short-term financial initiatives lasting only a few years.

I implore the government to insure sustainable broadband is available to all rural dwellers as a priority issue and before money is commited to enhancing existing broadband speeds.
