Project Canvas 'could boost broadband demand'
Posted 16th February 2010 at 3:05pm by Kimberley Howson
The introduction of a new internet-connected TV platform in the UK could boost the number of people using broadband, according to a new report.
Morgan Stanley's latest research has highlighted that Project Canvas, a next generation subscription-free platform, will raise interest from the six million broadband customers who at present do not pay for broadcast content.
In addition, it revealed that more people could pay for fixed broadband access due to the service, particularly as providers including BT and Sky could extend their content services.
A decision as to when the service will be launched is expected around March, although the platform will be unveiled at the end of this year at the earliest.
At the end of last year, the Project Canvas initiative was backed by both Channel 4 and TalkTalk.
Other bodies involved in the development of the digital TV concept include the BBC, ITV and Five.
