A new wireless broadband link has been developed to boost the bandwidth available to Alderney's states departments in the Channel Islands.

Faster access to medical images is to be enabled through a bandwidth increase from 2Mb to 40Mb, reports the BBC.

Use of the new Electronic Health and Social Care Record system, currently in development, will also be enabled through the £90,000 wireless scheme.

High-speed broadband access is also to be made available to the police, courts and states works, it is claimed.

Garry Fusellier, from Guernsey States, told the news provider: "This is tried and tested technology but is not used by the states that often.

"The project had its challenges - not least that the high cliffs of Alderney face Guernsey and it was not easy to find somewhere to site the dish in the island."

Last week, Councillor Colin Hart, Cabinet Member for Economic Development at Suffolk Coastal District Council, claimed that many essential business tasks – such as filing tax forms online – now require high-speed broadband.
