Web connection speeds in Norwich are set to be improved this summer by the establishment of a new wireless broadband service.

Engineering firm Babcock International is to fit a chain of rooftop antennas, enabling broadband users in the city to download at speeds of up to 30Mb.

With the government aiming to provide universal connection speeds of just 2Mb by 2012, this scheme could prove highly beneficial to local businesses and residents.

Speaking to Advertiser 24, Richard Lewis, Project Director at Babcock's Next Generation Networks arm, said the scheme - which is being supported by the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce - will offer broadband where it currently is not available.

"In Norwich and Norfolk, there is a shortage of broadband and we aim to serve the business community by providing more connectivity," he added.

Last month, Phil Harris, Managing Director of Norwich IT firm Norcom Technology, claimed that improved web services are required to attract and retain business in Norfolk.
