Next-generation broadband 'about more than just speed'
Posted 19th May 2010 at 4:12pm by Kimberley Howson
A leading broadband industry body has called on the government to rethink how next-generation internet services are defined.
According to the Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA), such platforms should be rated not just on their speed, but also on the quality of services that can be delivered over the network.
The body's spokesman stated that next-generation connections should also be a key priority for the new coalition government formed between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.
He explained: "Government should focus on encouraging investment in high-speed broadband to help create a competitive market in these areas.
"In the small minority of areas where the market may not deliver, the ISPA would welcome government efforts to ensure that no one is digitally excluded."
Recent figures from ISPreview.co.uk suggested that over half of UK consumers would happily pay more for access to 100Mb broadband, even if they already have a reliable 10Mb connection.

Speed and quality go hand in hand though surely? If your network is last-gen/current-gen you won't have the top speed AND you'll have shoddy coverage. The reverse is true too
