The number of mobile phone owners using Facebook has grown to 100 million, it has been announced.

According to official data from Facebook, six months ago just 65 million mobile phone users had accessed their social networking profiles via their handsets.

After the GSM Alliance published statistics showing that UK users were making mobile trips to Facebook more than any other site, this news shows that using phones to access the social networking site is a global phenomenon of unprecedented popularity.

There are already 70 different regional versions of Facebook that have been translated for mobile users around the world and network operators have fully embraced the site by allowing users to get updates as to status changes and photo additions via SMS.

Facebook's Chamath Palihapitiya said: "We work with every major device manufacturer and many operators to ensure we can provide the best possible mobile experience across the thousands of different devices, mobile operating systems and carriers."

Whether your allegiance lies with Apple, Nokia, Samsung or LG, you will be hard pressed to find a modern mobile that does not include an integrated Facebook app right out of the box, so the 100 million user mark may be just the tip of the iceberg.
