Although other phones have come along and stolen much of the spotlight, the iPhone still sets the standard for phones that can do just about anything. Thanks to the innovative apps-based console, the phone takes customization to incredible new heights, and it’s so powerful and versatile that you can almost do anything with it. When you combine this with the iPad, Apple fans almost don’t even need real computers anymore.

Blackberry predates the iPhone by a few years, but for a while there it seemed like Blackberry phones were going to be overtaken in all respects by the next generation of smart phones. Fortunately, though, with models like the Torch 9800, Blackberry has reclaimed the crown among phones that are meant to be used simply as phones. If you don’t need all the bells and whistles of an iPhone or an Android phone, Blackberries are still the best.

If you’re a gadget freak, as I am, then you need to at least take a look at the Motorola Droid X. It’s one of the most beautiful phones ever created, with an amazing screen and a nice, thin design that just hasn’t been matched by any other phone. It’s also extremely fast and has tons of useful applications. In fact, it has so many features that you might find it a little bloated.

The Nexus One, developed by HTC in collaboration with Google, is one of the more innovative phones on the market today. Using the Android platform, the phone is fast and easy to use, and its design is stellar. It may not be as feature-rich as the iPhones of the world, but if you just need your phone to be a phone, then the Nexus One is just about perfect.

HTC’s Evo 4G was surrounded by such incredible hype at the time of its release that it didn’t seem possible for the actual phone to live up to expectations. While it does fall short in a few minor areas, it mostly lives up to the hype, with one of the most gorgeous screens yet made and a modern interface that is deceptively simple. And now, thanks to the growing Android app market, phones like the Evo 4G can nearly match the iPhone in versatility and customizability.

Samsung phones usually don’t get the same level of hype that surrounds their Apple and Android counterparts, but the company does make solid, Windows-based phones that have all the basic features you could need. All you have to do is get over the fact that the Samsung Rogue is never going to be as feature-rich as other phones, and you’ll see that it’s actually a very strong offering. It’s perfect for all the basic phone features and its picture functionality is unmatched. Sure, it doesn’t have all those fancy app things, but that’s what computers are for.

As far as smart phones go, the Palm Pre Plus isn’t the most popular or well-known model, but it actually does a lot of things even better than the competition. Its grownup-oriented design doesn’t have all the silly, teenager-geared features of Android phones, and its operating system is more powerful than that of the iPhone. It’s perfect for multitasking, and it works just fine for all the usual phone tasks.

LG is one of those mobile phone companies that always make good phones but never quite get the attention they deserve. The simple fact is that phones like the LG GD900 are never going to be as popular as smartphones, and they definitely don’t have that wow factor that makes people rabid to buy them. Still, if all you need to do is make some calls and maybe do some texting, the LG phone is just fine.

While other smartphones try to go electronic with everything, Blackberry phones still cling to the old-fashioned keyboard. Personally, I find these actual keyboards easier to use than the sketchy electronic varieties included in phones such as the iPhone, but I can see why others might want to keep things simple by having nothing more than a touch screen and a single button.

T-Mobile’s Android-based Garminfone is not quite as advanced as some of the other phones on the market, and it is definitely behind the pack in some important ways, but it is perfect for the things that it is intended for. Its GPS works perfectly, its Google navigation program is great, and its OS leaves nothing to be desired. If you don’t mind going without a customizable app interface, the Garminfone will do just fine.
