Why Go With Genes Reunited
Genes Reunited has plenty going for it, including:
- British, Welsh and Irish focus
Genes Reunited has a tremendous database of vital records, particularly in the British and Welsh ancestry chain.
- Fun!
Community message boards, private chat, live events, games, quizzes. Is this a genealogy service or a dating site? Either way, you’re going to have a blast finding out about your past.
- Records galore
Lest you should think Genes Reunited is all fun and no business, there is a cool 515+ million records database that users can access. The records include everything from military records to death certificates, photos, newspaper archives, and more.
What’s on Offer
- Build your family tree
- Research relatives
- Family history activities
- Live events, tips, and activities
- Active community
Additionally, Genes Reunited has a tremendous database of historical records that include census records dating all the way back to 1801, with birth, marriage, and death certificates, military records for countries around the world, and for various wars, parish records, photo archives, and a lot more. It’s definitely among the most impressive libraries we’ve seen around.
Ease of Use
Genes Reunited is easy to use in terms of functionality. You can add names to your tree individually or upload your GENCOM info. You can also use the Quick Family Finder tool to create a heritage path for your family. There are a lot of tutorials, help guides, and, as mentioned, very friendly community members available to guide you through the research process.
Genes Reunited has good search functionality too. You can broaden or narrow down your search using parameters like surname, year of birth, place of birth, etc. Each search you run will return multiple results, so you can select the proper entry to include in your tree. It’s really simple to work with and a lot smoother and faster than most manually-driven trees.
Features
Here are a few of the best features that we liked using with Genes Reunited:
- Hot matches:
Hot Matches is a cool feature that scans your tree entries with the names on other family trees for similarities. If a match comes up, you and the other party receive a message about a possible relative link. You can also trigger a Super Hot Match. This happens when both the birth year and parents match up with a matching name on multiple trees.
- 550+ million historical records (mostly English, Welsh, and Irish)
That’s a staggering number of records to start your research with. You’ll only have access to this bountiful library with the Platinum plan, but that might give you the impetus you need to splurge the extra few dollars. Records include marriage, birth and death certificates, Victorian census records, and more. Cool fact: Genes Reunited has documents that may contain your great, great, great grandpappy’s original handwriting!
- Quick Family Finder
This feature starts with your birth records and works backwards to find ancestors linked to you.
Customer Support
Genes Reunited has its own ebook that helps you with tips on how to optimally use the system. There are some helpful guides to walk you through the initial and more advanced stages. Genes Reunited also has a Frequently Asked Questions section that is loaded with tons of useful information. Everything from subscriptions to search and match help is detailed in these pages.
But the ebook and FAQ section pales in comparison to the extensive community network. Genes Reunited has the largest network of friendly, help-ready, and, most importantly, knowledgeable members out there. And everyone's on board to help you out. You can ask questions about how to do research, get advice about what results might mean, or find out more details about your heritage, ancestral villages, and more. It’s really a great community, and you can chat with anyone at any time.
Pricing
I’m not going to lie, if you want anything good out of Genes Reunited, you’re going to have to pay for it. Fortunately, there are 3 different membership options to choose from. Users can start building their family tree completely for free. All you can really do with this plan is to build a basic family tree based on the information you already have. You can add as many relatives as you want, search for people by name (only one record view though), upload photos, and import GEDCOM files. Genes Reunited actually has a great Keepsafe feature. It’s like an online vault where you can store your photos and documents. You can also edit, share, and pin these files for other people on your tree. Free members can also reply to messages from others. If you’re happy staying at this level, then no need to pay a thing.
If you want to have a more involved experience, including viewing more records or sending messages, you’ll need to pay for credits. Genes Reunited sells a basic or a bulk credits package, and credits get cheaper the more you buy. If you want access to all the features on Genes Reunited, you can purchase a full subscription plan. Membership benefits include unlimited research and viewing of records, sending messages to other members via the Genes Reunited contact center, unlimited posts on community boards, and tips for better searches. The Platinum plan also includes a complete 1311 census for England and Wales, birth, marriage, and death certificates from 1837-2004, and Victorian Census Records from 1841-1901.
Bottom Line
Genes Reunited is a great option for helping you build your family tree and find relatives from all over. The interactive community makes it easy to get help when you need it. And Genes Reunited is loaded up with fun features like chat groups and live events. The pay-as-you-go credits option is an easy way to get a little research done without making a larger financial commitment.
