Is America’s Preferred Home Warranty Worth It?

I think America’s Preferred Home Warranty is worth it for many homeowners. It lets you choose your own contractor, giving you more control and leading to quicker repairs. The coverage is comprehensive, and there are plenty of affordable add-ons.

However, it’s a little more expensive than other companies, and it only has one basic plan on offer. But it does give you flexibility in terms of the service fee and monthly premium.

Failed to cover a cheap but critical part of the homes well being
My water pipes started to all of a sudden begin to bang when shutting off a faucet in the home. Plumber came and did a pressure check. The main pressure valve at the water line input to the home failed and I watched as they tried to adjust it down but to no avail. The valve was not allowing any adjustment meaning the entire house was over pressurized and we are lucky to not have burst any pipes or fittings. I called, told it was covered. part and cost was $178. I was told to hold on for a minute to get it approved. 10 minutes later, i am told sorry, it is not approved. no valves are approved. Well it was my one and only claim for the contract year, the valve is a super important part of the homes plumbing and can cause way more damage BUT APHW does not think so. I called after the fact to ask them to verify even the MAIN PRESSURE VALVE for the entire house was excluded. I was told i will get a call back, no one called. Well, I am up for renewal and will not be renewing. I am afraid to find out what else they will not cover if i actually need something done in the future

This a follow up from an earlier review…
This a follow up from an earlier review After I voice my frustration with APHW they contacted me. I will say that the reimbursement process was easy and like they said they would I was reimbursed sooner than the 7 to 10 days I was told to allow. I felt better from my earlier experience. So for that I want to thank them.

What is America’s Preferred Home Warranty?

America’s Preferred Home Warranty (APHW) is a home warranty provider that has been operating for over 20 years. The company can provide coverage for owners of single-family homes, condos, townhouses, and even multi-family units.

While home insurance covers unexpected events or accidents, a home warranty helps to protect your appliances and/or systems as they age. Without a home warranty, you could be on the hook for hundreds or even thousands of dollars if something like your air conditioner, oven, or electrical system suddenly stops working due to age or regular wear and tear.

America’s Preferred Home Warranty features

APHW offers one basic type of home warranty coverage, along with some optional add-ons.

APHW has been around for over two decades and has thousands of positive online reviews. It is available in every state excluding California and has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Regarding safety, the company protects your personal information by restricting access and training employees to safely handle sensitive information. It uses electronic, physical, and procedural safeguards to protect your information.

The privacy policy on its website details the information the company collects, why it is collected, how it's collected, and who it is shared with.

How America’s Preferred Home Warranty Works

To get started with APHW, you purchase the plan that works best for your needs. Then, if an item that is covered in your plan requires repairs or replacement, you can make a claim online or on the phone in minutes.

Next, you’ll have to schedule a contractor to diagnose the problem and provide a quote to APHW. Once the company provides approval, the work can begin. When it comes time to pay, APHW will reimburse you for the cost or pay the contractor directly.

How to Get Started With America’s Preferred Home Warranty

To start with APHW, you can request a quote online or over the phone. If you opt to reach out online, you must fill out a quote form. The form asks for the following details:

  • First and last name

  • Phone number

  • Email address

  • Address

After you submit the form, a representative from the company will reach out to you and go over your options. Then, you choose the right one and complete your purchase. The whole process is easy and quick.

America’s Preferred Home Warranty Customer Service

APHW doesn’t publicly state its hours of operation for customer service, and it doesn’t make any promises about email response time. However, when I gave the company a call on a Friday morning at 9 AM CT, I was connected to an agent in seconds.

Finally, the company has a helpful FAQ section and a blog reviewing several valuable tips for homeowners.

How to Cancel or Pause an America’s Preferred Home Warranty Subscription

If you want to cancel your home warranty, you need to reach out to APHW via phone call or email. There is a full 100% refund if you cancel within the first 30 days of your purchase.

However, if you cancel outside of your first 30 days or if you made a claim in your first 30 days, you will receive a prorated refund minus any paid claims. You will also have an administrative fee taken from the refund, which will not exceed 10% of the contract fee.

Is There an America’s Preferred Home Warranty App?

APHW has an app called Real-Pro that is designed for real estate professionals. It lets agents manage and order home warranties, share contracts, make payments, order marketing supplies, review warranties, and more. The app is straightforward, easy to navigate, and features an intuitive layout.

America’s Preferred Home Warranty Pricing

How Much Does America’s Preferred Home Warranty Cost?

APHW has one basic type of coverage with two plans. The first plan will cost between $54.92 and $62.08 a month, depending on your location, and has a service fee of $50.

For the other plan, you will pay between $50.75 and $57.42 a month, with a service fee of $100.

Basic Plan with $50 deductible
Basic Plan with $100 deductible

Cost Per Month

$46.58-$62.08

$42.42-$57.42

Service fee

$50

$100

The exact monthly cost for each plan depends on which state you live in. APHW’s website has a pricing page that lets you enter your Zip code and see the pricing in your area. For example, in Texas, the Basic plan with a $50 deductible will be $59.08 a month and the $100 deductible plan is $54.92 monthly.

If you prefer a lower service fee, the first plan will be right for you, but if you value a lower monthly cost, the second plan with the $100 deductible might make more sense. In general, APHW is a little more expensive than other companies in the industry.

Optional add-ons

APHW offers optional add-ons to extend your coverage. The cost for these add-ons is fixed and doesn’t change from state to state as premiums do. Here is a look at the pricing for each of the add-ons.

America’s Preferred Home Warranty vs Choice Home Warranty

APHW and Choice Home Warranty both offer 24/7 service requests online and over the phone, but Choice Home Warranty has generally lower premiums. Choice has a healthy amount of contractors in the network, but APHW allows you to choose your own, so you have unlimited choices. APHW also offers lower service call fees.

America’s Preferred Home Warranty vs Select Home Warranty

Compared to Select Home Warranty, the premiums of APHW are quite a bit higher on the lower end but a little cheaper on the higher end. Both companies offer around-the-clock service requests and have fairly similar service call fees. Select Home Warranty’s 10,000-contractor network is decent, but you don’t need to worry about in- or out-of-network contractors when working with APHW.

America’s Preferred Home Warranty vs American Home Shield

Both APHW and American Home Shield, provide service requests any time of the day, but APHW will normally charge you less for each call. When it comes to premiums, APHW is more expensive across the board. American Home Shield has a large contractor network of 17,000, but this doesn’t provide the same level of freedom as APHW, which lets you choose your own.

Bottom Line (Is America’s Preferred Home Warranty Worth It?)

I believe APHW is a good choice for homeowners looking for a home warranty. While the premiums can be a little higher than other options, the ability to choose your own contractor is a great touch.

The company provides plenty of add-ons to customize your policy, and getting started is straightforward. I like how APHW makes its premiums available online and shares plenty of information about its coverage so you can make an educated decision. It has a long history of reliable service, and canceling your plan is straightforward if you feel it’s not right for you.

A Warranty That Delivers Terrible Value
In case my 1-star review on Google is difficult to find, here is the original with an update: I signed up for this home warranty six years ago through my realtor, hoping for peace of mind as I live alone. Unfortunately, after my recent claim experience, I cannot recommend this company. Over the past six years, I didn’t file a single claim until this week. My repair bill totaled $2,730, and they only covered $400, costing me $2,944 out of pocket (including this year’s warranty premium of $614). That means I paid more than the repair itself, even though I had active warranty coverage. The first five years of payments (total $2,900), during which I had no claims, are effectively sunk costs or money wasted since the warranty provided no benefit. Even when I finally needed the coverage, the restrictive terms and conditions and minimal reimbursement rendered the warranty useless. The cost-to-benefit ratio is abysmal, with premiums far outweighing the value received. If you’re considering this company, make sure to carefully read the terms and conditions. The exclusions, limitations, and caps in the fine print make it easy for them to deny or minimize claims, leaving you with the majority of repair costs. Instead of wasting your money on their warranty, set up your own repair fund. Had I done that, I'd be ahead. This was a poor investment, and I strongly advise others to avoid this company. ******Update****** APHW decided to pay out an additional $249, bringing the total reimbursement to $649. This means I spent $614 on this year’s premium to receive $649 back, but I still had to pay $2,081 out of pocket. This brings my total out-of-pocket cost to $2,695, despite having active warranty coverage. This still make the warranty a terrible value. Had I saved six years’ worth of premiums instead, I would have had more than enough to cover this repair and any additional expenses. I cannot imagine a single scenario where their warranty coverage would pay out an amount significant enough to make it worthwhile. While the Maximum Aggregate Liability of $25,000 sounds appealing, the maximum liability caps and exclusions make it highly unlikely they would ever pay that amount in aggregate. To even approach that limit, you would need to file a significant number of claims for repairs under $1,000 each in a single year with every claim fully approved, a scenario that is almost impossible given their restrictive terms.
