HVAC System Types Serviced
Let’s begin at the beginning. Modernize is not a contractor. That means you won’t be sitting with someone from Modernize to help you plan out your HVAC project, discuss pricing quotes, and determine contract terms. Instead, Modernize offers you a platform for comparing price quotes for your HVAC project.
In terms of a comparison platform, we think Modernize has done a great job. It’s well-organized, easy to use, and gets you price quotes relatively quickly. What’s more, since projects are submitted by homeowners and bid upon by contractors, Modernize gives people the opportunity to find a more competitive rate than they might get through the more traditional comparison shopping channels. Here’s how that works:
-
Answer a few basic questions about the project you want completed. These are things like type of repair or installation required, location, and size of your home.
-
You’ll get paired with up to 4 contractors via the Modernize matching system. These 4 contractors will send you rate quotes based on your project details.
-
You can read about the contractors, schedule an appointment to discuss the rate quote, and hear more from these professionals without obligation.
-
Choose the contractor you like best or walk away.
What's neat about this system is that Modernize pairs you up with the right HVAC specialists for you. Meaning that the matches you receive will be able to do the exact type of job you're looking for. That saves lots of time getting in touch with contractors that don't know how to do the job you need done. Modernize also looks for local contractors, so the time frame is generally faster, as well.
Modernize works with a wide, nation-wide network of professional contractors. And there’s almost no HVAC project that isn’t covered by the crew. Some of the projects and services available through this network include:
-
Split duct AC unit installation and repair
-
Multi-split AC unit installation and repair
-
Central air conditioning installation and repair
-
Furnace repairs and installations
-
Boiler installations and repairs
-
Radiator repairs and installations
-

Those are broad categories that include tens of projects each, so there’s plenty of options. Modernize contractors work with all the major HVAC brands too, including:

Pricing
Using the Modernize platform itself is completely free. You can search through the website, read the valuable information guides, and generate rate quotes all for free. Modernize makes money via the contractors that work within its network. So, consumers don’t have to pay a thing.
The pricing for the individual heating system or air conditioning unit that you require is a different story. Those services you'll have to pay for, obviously. Since you're not getting any actual HVAC services through Modernize, the platform doesn't set the rates you will eventually pay for those services. Rather the individual contractors will decide how much you pay for each project you initiate, including repairs, replacements, and installation projects.
Pricing for a project will vary considerably depending on a lot of factors, including the type of HVAC project you require, the type of system you have or are looking to install, the size of your house, and its location (pricing for the same project will vary even from one city to the next). There is no way for you to get an exact price quote or even a small range to go off of. Instead, you'll really need to discuss the individual project directly with your potential contractor.
The good thing about using Modernize to generate price quotes is that you are under no commitment to use the contractor even after a quote has been generated. If you decide that the price is too much or that you don’t like the contractor for some other reason, you can walk away without any remorse.
HVAC projects can typically range anywhere from $1,000 up to $15,000 depending on the factors mentioned above and others. Modernize says the average HVAC project can range from $3,250-$12,586. So, it’s really a good idea to look at your options before you make any decisions.

Customer Service and Response Time
Modernize has regular customer service. This is the industry standard for the type of service being provided (you don't generally have any middle-of-the-night emergencies when doing comparison shopping). You can reach someone via phone or email with the channels provided below. The individual contractors have more flexible customer support options, and many of them even provide you with an emergency hotline you can call if something breaks during non-office hours. You'll set up an appointment with your contractor and have a technician dispatched to you, depending on the type of situation you are dealing with (emergency or non-emergency).
While there’s no 24/7 support, Modernize does have a ton of useful information free on the website that homeowners can use. For example, it’s got a handy checklist homeowners can use to see if it’s time for them to replace their HVAC system (or it’s still financially-sensible to have repairs done on the old unit). There’s an entire section on the different types of heating systems, differences between ductless and split A/C units, and how much you’ll actually save with a top Energy Star rated system. Modernize also has some convenient tools like a cost estimate and interview questions for you to ask potential contractors.
With all of the extras that are thrown in (for free, remember), Modernize certainly puts itself ahead of the competition in a lot of ways.
Warranty
One downside is that we couldn’t find any warranty information from Modernize. Many comparison sites will guarantee the work of their contractors on some level or another. Modernize makes no such claims (or at least does not make this policy apparent if there is such a clause in place). We’d like to see more accountability for the partner contractors in the network.
Summary
Modernize is a convenient tool if you are looking to find competitively-priced contractors for all types of HVAC services, from replacing old units to installing brand new ones and repairing parts for something in between. The service has a large network of professional contractors to recommend, and Modernize also gives you local options when they're available. What's more, Modernize has the most extensive resource section we've seen yet. It provides homeowners with tons of useful information, buying guides, questions to ask contractors, and more. So, homeowners can really get the information they're looking for, save money, and get the job done quickly using Modernize.
