Poynt is a straightforward online application process.
- Start the process by entering your name, email address, and phone number.

Once you've been approved, you'll be able to start transacting payments using the virtual terminal and invoicing software. This initial approval is limited to transactions up to $10,000 or the first 10 calendar days. In the meantime, your case will be reviewed by the Risk team. You'll get a response within 1 business day, asking for more information or confirming your approval.
What’s Unique About Poynt?
Poynt is a solid credit card processor, but what really makes it rise above the competition is the fact that it serves a dual purpose. In fact, Poynt is both a point of sale system and a credit card processor, making it more convenient and economical for businesses to manage their payments than with 2 separate tools. What this means also is that you can accept both on-the-go payments as well as in-person transactions, giving your business more flexibility to offer your customers payment options that suit their needs or preferences. If that weren't enough, here are several more features that make Poynt smart terminals stand out:
- Lots of 3rd party app integrations
Poynt offers developers full API and SDKs to enhance the user experience. There are several business apps that the system will integrate with smoothly, including employee time management apps like Homebase (convenient for all types of businesses, especially SMBs), POS solutions like eHopper (great for retailers, clothing stores, etc.), order-management apps like Talech (ideal for restaurants, bars, and other food-based establishments), appointment booking software like Mangomint (spas, salons, counselors, etc.), and order management software like Rocket Tabs (good for juggling pre-authorized cards, printing offers, etc.). There are also gift card readers, kitchen display apps, and mobile business solutions in the mix. Poynt has a really well-rounded developer showcase.
- Flexible payment processing options
Poynt handles payment processing in-house, so you can get the low rate offered by Poynt. Or you can choose to integrate with 3rd party payment processors. Poynt works with around 15 top merchants, including First Data, Chase Paymentech, Global Payments, and Elavon, to name a few. Bear in mind that you’ll pay the processing fee according to the 3rd party processor if you choose this option.
- Great hardware
Finally, the Poynt smart terminal is pretty darn cool. Aside from the attractive design, lightweight and handheld, Poynt has plenty of practical design perks, as well. Things like dual-facing cameras, so both customer and merchant can work simultaneously without having to maneuver the machine, NFC antenna and EMV chip reader, touchscreen displays, and thermal receipt printer make the device a pleasure to work with. There are also added benefits like micro USB port, ethernet port, and WiFi capability (that also works offline).
Customer Support
Poynt offers 24/7 tech support. You can give them a call or just send an email via the online contact form. You can also chat with customer support using the live chat feature, very helpful if you're stuck with a technical glitch. Or you can troubleshoot on your own using the detailed help center and FAQ sections on the site. According to online reviews, Poynt customer support is fast to respond, especially on the Facebook page.
Pricing (Software and Hardware)
With flat-rate pricing that starts at 2.3%, Poynt makes a solid offer for most merchants. What's more, you can get instant activation and next-day funding. And the nice thing about Poynt is that it doesn't charge many of the usual fees like activation fees, interchange fees, assessment fees, or inactivity fees. You can also cancel any time you'd like without penalty, a feature most businesses will appreciate.
Alternatively, you can purchase a monthly bundle as follows:
This isn't the cheapest plan that you can find, but Poynt is definitely not expensive by any stretch of the imagination, either.
Bottom Line
Poynt is a solid credit card processor that claims to be the future of payment processing. With the ability to process any type of digital payment, including digital wallets like ApplePay and Google Wallet, EMV, NFC, and other chip cards, Poynt provides merchants with a straightforward and flexible payment processing solution for all variables.
Poynt's hardware has a sleek design, one that most merchants and customers will appreciate. The dual-screen display lets you provide a quick checkout with more privacy afforded to the consumers. The touchscreen further adds to the convenience. Additionally, Poynt's flat rate charges and simplified, no-fee structure makes it an affordable option for most SMBs. Poynt is well-suited for retailers, restaurants, Ecommerce, and other mobile businesses.
